To meet the growing demand for conductivity and durability in components for electric vehicles and EV infrastructure, Pometon has developed an innovative “ready-to-press” copper powder to support the electric mobility sector.
Due to its high electrical conductivity, durability and malleability, copper is widely used in electric vehicles and electronic components. Electric vehicles require more than twice as much copper as combustion vehicles; copper is also crucial in EV infrastructure, such as charging stations and power grids.
Sintered copper components can support the transition to electric motors. To achieve this, Pometon, with its expertise in the production of electrolytic and water-atomised copper powders, continues to develop “ready-to-press” products that meet the requirements of classic sintering processes in the production of copper components.
Pometon has developed a “ready-to-press” copper powder that highlights the possibility of creating sintered copper components such as collector bars or conductive battery components with good conductivity characteristics. Using press and sintering technology, this hybrid solution enables the interaction between atomised copper and electrolytic copper, thereby optimising the conductivity of the material. This traditional high-volume technology represents a good compromise between quality, performance, availability and cost.
After numerous modifications of the composition and different pressing and sintering parameters, we can state that we have achieved electrical conductivity values (IACS%) between 88% and 92%, compared to an annealed pure copper rod.
Further studies will be conducted on the effects of coining and subsequent annealing of the sintered copper premix, confident of a further improvement in electrical conductivity performance.
